Taking CBD Orally -- What is Best? Under the Tongue or With Food?


Phytocannabinoids like CBD support the endocannabinoid system and can help support the body in many ways according to research. CBD and other phytocannabinoids work to bring balance or homeostasis to the body. Often people find that CBD can promote more restful sleep, ease feelings of stress, ease aches, support digestive health and more. But as with many plant based or natural approaches it can be confusing as to how to best utilize CBD. The aim of this post is to help address that question.


As an aromatherapist and formulator I advise my clients to use CBD salves and creams topically to address localized joint and muscle pain. For overall wellness and to support the endocannabinoid system, sleep, mood, or to ease overall bodily aches or inflammation ingestion of CBD rich compounds works well.


Finding the right amount of CBD and the best way to take it may take some experimenting. But if we look at the issue at hand and the severity of it we can make some suggestions as to what is best -- for example feelings of stress vs digestive health.


If a client is experiencing anxious feelings I might suggest using a CBD tincture under the tongue held for 30-90 seconds to allow for rapid absorption into the bloodstream (10 -15 minutes) then swallowed to allow for absorption via the digestive system.


If the client is having digestive issues, swallowing the CBD with foods high in medium chain triglycerides might be the best choice. These foods appear to enhance the absorption of CBD as they are processed through fast past metabolism -- perhaps even allowing CBD to bypass first pass metabolism.


In general taking CBD under the tongue allows it to enter the bloodstream quickly and swallowing or consuming CBD in a food takes longer for effect and may reduce bioavailability if not taken with oil rich foods. But in the end taking CBD in any way supports the endocannabinoid system and overall wellness.


So in general, if you seek rapid absorption -- try a tincture under the tongue. For slower onset with good bioavailability, consume your CBD with oil rich foods.
